Man charged in domestic incident involving gun

Antavious Cortez Brooks, 20, of 307 Hitching Post Rd., has been charged with first degree domestic violence in connection with the incident. According to a report from the Greenwood County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to Swann Meadows Apartments, located at 1091 Parkland Place Rd., around 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon in reference to a man with a gun.

Petersen resigns as superintendent

In the wake of widespread speculation that he would be terminated, Dr. Mark Petersen, superintendent of Greenwood School District 52, on Tuesday tendered his resignation effective July 31. Petersen was not present at the meeting, which was presided over by Wally Hall, director of projects for District 52. Board Chariman Paul Cobb read a statement announcing Petersen's resignation at the beginning of the meeting, calling it a "mutually agreed upon separation." Cobb said he and other board members began to question the district's stability when they were notified that Petersen was the finalist for the superintendent position in Aiken, a significantly larger district than Ninety Six.

Husband, wife facing drug charges

A husband and wife are facing drug charges after the Greenwood County Drug Enforcement Unit raided their Ninety Six home Wednesday. Thomas Fredrick "Tony" Morris, 56, of 107 Greene Ave., Ninety Six, has been charged with trafficking in methamphetamines and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in connection with the incident.

Sara Turner Nelson, 32, of Ninety Six is accused of providing alcohol to a prisoner and having inappropriate sexual contact with a prisoner. Nelson has been charged with furnishing a prisoner with alcohol and second-degree sexual misconduct with an inmate, according to a news release.

Fire destroys Ninety Six home

The fire touched off just before 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning at a residence on Tillman Territory Road in Ninety Six, according to Greenwood County fire coordinator Steve Holmes. Holmes said there were no occupants in the home when the fire started.

Dr. Betsy McDowell, chair of the Department of Nursing at Newberry College, has been selected by the National League for Nursing for membership in the ninth class of Fellows to be inducted into the Academy of Nursing Education. With the addition of this new 22-member class of Fellows, total membership in the Academy of Nursing Education now stands at 216 leaders in nurse education from nursing programs across the academic spectrum and from other organizations committed to advancing the quality of health care.

Couple charged with neglect of children

A couple arrested last month on drug charges was arrested again Thursday after both of their children reportedly tested positive for methamphetamines. Thomas Fredrick "Tony" Morris, 56, and Kayce Rhodes Morris, 46, both of 107 Greene Ave., Ninety Six, have been charged with unlawful neglect of a child in connection with the incident.
