A couple was arrested Monday night following a domestic dispute over their child where deputies found a quantity of cocaine. Matthew Steven Pittman, 35, of 229 Jebosha St., and Jennifer Carry Burnette, 26, are each facing charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and unlawful neglect of a child in connection with the incident.

Mother charged after children test positive for drugs
Rachel Hunt Villafuerte, 34, of 202 Pettit Dr., Ninety Six, has been charged with unlawful conduct toward a child in connection with the incident. According to a report from the Greenwood County Sheriff's Office, agents with the Greenwood County Drug Enforcement Unit were notified by officials at Department of Social Services that Villafuerte's two children, one less than a year old and the other a 5-year-old, both tested positive for methamphetamines.

Charges dismissed for man accused of sexual assault
A Fountain Inn man accused of sexually assaulting a woman earlier this year in Ninety Six had the charges relating to the incident dismissed at a preliminary hearing. David Clay Seymour, 23, of 101 First St., Fountain Inn, was charged with kidnapping and assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct in connection with the April 2015 incident.

Law enforcement agencies kick off Sober or Slammer
Capt. Billy Yongue, commander of SCHP Troop 2, is joined by representatives of State Transport Police, Greenwood County Sheriff's Office, Greenwood Police Department, Ninety Six Police Department and Ware Shoals Police Department for Tuesday's Sober or Slammer kickoff event. Area law enforcement agencies gathered Tuesday to kick off Sober or Slammer, a traffic enforcement campaign aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities.

One killed in Belle Rive fire
The fire touched off at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday night at 161 Belle Rive Dr., drawing firefighters from six different fire departments. Jerry Roberts, fire chief at Lower Lake Volunteer Fire Department, said he was unsure about what may have started the fire.

Coroner: Fire responsible for death
A man who was found dead while a fire at his residence was being extinguished died as the result of the fire, according to Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox. Cox said 75-year-old Jerry Alan Lance died as the result of carbon monoxide toxicity sustained in the fire.

County accepting project applications for CPST
Greenwood County officials are now accepting applications for projects to be submitted for the upcoming capital project sales tax referendum. The capital project sales tax, commonly referred to as the penny tax, would add an additional 1 percent in sales tax county-wide if passed by referendum during the general election.

Busted water line forces school closures in Ninety Six
Ninety Six schools were dismissed early Tuesday after school officials said the water pressure was insufficient to provide adequate restroom facilities. Jay Reynolds, a Commissioner with Ninety Six CPW said a truck backed over a fire hydrant when leaving Ninety Six Primary School Tuesday morning.

Boil water advisory lifted in Ninety Six
A boil water advisory put in place on Tuesday afternoon for the Town of Ninety Six has been lifted, according to Ninety Six Commissioners of Public Works. Jay Reynolds, a Commissioner with Ninety Six CPW, said test results were normal for water samples sent Tuesday to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Fire destroys Pucketts Ferry home
Greenwood County fire coordinator Steve Holmes said the fire touched off about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at 131 Watersedge Rd. The first emergency responder on scene reported flames through the roof. "There was a lot of heavy lightning in the area," Holmes said.
