Ed was born and raised in Spartanburg, the son of Grace Ellyn Eubanks Deal and the late Edward Lee Deal Sr. He began at age 15 as a bagger for Community Cash Stores going on to manage various stores in the chain until they closed. He remained in retail as a merchandiser of various products up until his health decline.
